Of Smiles, Safety, and Steady Progress : Diary Entry - 19th May 2025

Morning Charm

There’s a certain freshness to Sunday mornings - even more when they spill into Monday with the same spirit. I had stepped out of the house early, and the day greeted me with an unexpected but heartwarming sight: a few small children gathered around, full of energy and mischief. Their carefree laughter, their tiny eyes full of curiosity, and the innocent swag they carried in their little walk - it was impossible not to smile. As is now second nature to me, I walked up to them, chatted briefly, and clicked a selfie. That one candid moment set the tone for the day. There’s something very grounding about spending time with children - their raw energy is infectious.

Morning Meeting --- A Talk on Safety

We kept today’s morning meeting short and focused. After the daily prayer, I spoke on a subject very close to my heart - safety. I tried to simplify it for everyone by highlighting four key aspects:

1. Unsafe Condition - A physical or environmental hazard present in the workplace. E.g., oil on the floor, broken guardrails, uninsulated wires.

2. Unsafe Act - A human behavior or decision that increases risk. E.g., bypassing safety procedures, not using PPE, climbing without a harness.

3. Near Miss - An incident that could have led to an accident but didn’t - just by chance. These are golden opportunities to learn before harm happens.

4. Accident - The actual occurrence of damage or injury.

Message shared:

> “If we report the first three - Unsafe Conditions, Unsafe Acts, and Near Misses - proactively, we can almost always prevent the fourth: Accidents.”

Simple. But powerful.

Plant Pulse Check

Post meeting, I made my usual round to the store and briefly inspected a few areas. The plant is operational, but the issue of frequent stoppages still persists. It’s like a car that keeps turning off at every signal. There’s momentum, but the journey isn’t smooth yet.

I took time to summarize both yesterday’s (Sunday’s) and today’s performance and shared it on our WhatsApp group. I believe it helps everyone understand where we stand - transparency brings clarity, and clarity brings direction.

New Joinees - New Hopes

Today we welcomed two new expat team members:

A Design Manager with strong cement project background.

An Electrical Foreman, experienced and sharp-eyed.

Introduced them to the team, had a brief round of informal conversation to make them feel comfortable. Integration is always a process - and it’s our responsibility to make it smooth. New minds bring new energy.

Weather & Rhythm

Today, no rain. The sky remained overcast in parts, teasing us with its weight.

But unlike the weather’s indecisiveness, both Line 1 and Line 2 are operational. This alone is reason enough to smile at the end of the day.

Reflections

As I wind down for the day, I can’t help but think - some days are less about giant leaps and more about steady steps. Today was one such day. Quiet, stable, and full of potential.

---

Key Points of the Day:

  • Spent a joyful moment with local children - started the day with smiles.
  • Morning meeting focused on 4 pillars of safety: Unsafe Condition, Unsafe Act, Near Miss, and Accident.
  • Plant operational but suffering frequent stoppages - performance summaries shared.
  • Welcomed two new expat members - Design Manager & Electrical Foreman.
  • Weather remained dry - no rain today.
  • Both lines running - stable plant operations.
  • Reinforced team communication and safety mindset.
