The Power of Practice & The Truth About 5S | Plant Diary – February 20, 2025
Morning Talk – The Strength of Repetition
"I do not fear a man who has practiced a thousand kicks once. I fear the man who has practiced one kick a thousand times."
This legendary quote from a legend, Bruce Lee, set the tone for today’s morning talk.
I firmly believe in the power of practice and mastery. Over time, I have realized that the rush to consume more—whether it's books, skills, or information—often leads to shallow understanding. I, too, once fell into the trap of reading 50 books a year. I enthusiastically purchased many books, only to find that most were variations of the same fundamental ideas, repackaged with technical add-ons.
Now, my perspective has changed. Instead of reading 50 books, I now believe that one should read a great book 50 times—to absorb, reflect, and truly master its wisdom.
SOP Development – Job Planning Register
Today, I made significant progress in developing the SOP for the Job Planning Register. After thinking about it for a long time, it's finally taking shape. This SOP will be built systematically, refining each element one by one. Having a structured job planning system is crucial for better coordination, tracking, and execution of maintenance and operational activities.
5S – Leadership Defines Its Success
Reflecting on my past experiences with 5S implementation, I realized a harsh truth—true 5S does not exist unless leadership truly believes in it. The best strategies and methodologies fail if the leadership keeps changing and management does not back the initiative.
This thought became the theme of my LinkedIn post today:
"5S thrives where there is stable leadership. Consider these real-life examples of mine:
-> In two plants, 5S was initiated and sustained because the Plant Head’s position was stable.
-> In another plant, a single HOD, who has been in the same role for a decade, ensures 5S is followed rigorously in his department—while the rest of the plant operates in disorder due to frequent leadership changes. This proves a simple fact: 5S cannot take root where leadership is constantly shifting."
Key takeaway: 5S needs consistent leadership to be truly effective. Otherwise, it remains just a temporary initiative rather than a lasting culture.
Colleague's Return – A Conversation on Time Well Spent
Had a good discussion with my senior colleague, Mr. BVK Raju, who returned from a 15-day tour of the USA. He had a great time with his full family. It was good to catch up on everything that happened in his absence.
Plant Status – Maintenance in Progress
Both production lines remain stopped, and maintenance work continues. With downtime, it’s a good opportunity to focus on SOP development, 5S improvements, and structured planning for when the plant resumes operations.
Final Thoughts
📌 Mastery comes from repetition, not volume.
📌 5S is not about tools, but about leadership.
📌 SOP development is progressing—step by step.
📌 A leader’s belief in discipline sets the tone for the entire organization.
Let’s build systems that sustain, not just short-term initiatives.
